Description
Karuppu Kavuni rice, also known as black rice, is a rare and ancient heirloom grain cultivated in South India. It is also called “Forbidden Rice” or “Emperor’s Rice” because historically it was reserved for royalty due to its rarity and nutritional value. The rice has a distinct deep blackish-purple color and a nutty flavor.
Karuppu Kavuni rice is highly valued for its health-enhancing properties, primarily because it is an “antioxidant powerhouse”.
- Rich in antioxidants: The deep color is caused by anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that help fight free radicals, reduce inflammation, and support eye and immune health.
- Supports heart health: Anthocyanins and fiber help to lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, promote HDL (“good”) cholesterol, and protect arteries from plaque buildup.
- Aids digestion and weight management: The high fiber content improves digestive health, promotes a feeling of fullness, and can help with weight loss efforts.
- Helps regulate blood sugar: With a low glycemic index, it is a healthier option for people with diabetes compared to white rice, as it helps stabilize blood sugar levels.
- Boosts immunity: Zinc, iron, and B vitamins help strengthen the body’s natural defenses.
- Promotes cognitive health: The iron, zinc, and B-complex vitamins support brain and nerve function, which can improve memory and reduce mental fatigue.
